Each year in the United States two million women are beaten by their partners, and more than half a million women report being raped or sexually assaulted.
In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, each October PBS39 hosts a public town hall event designed to increase awareness of the public services available to residents of South Bethlehem and the greater Lehigh Valley region in regards to domestic and teen dating violence. The event includes a special screening of the powerful documentary, Telling Amy’s Story.
In addition to the town hall event, PBS39 also sponsors related educational assemblies and workshops. All Donegan Elementary and Broughal Middle School students attend the Weller Center assembly, while 5th and 8th grade classes will take part in the healthy relationships workshops.
Each component of the program will employ the 3-part model of, “Share, Discuss and Refer,” wherein attendees will receive information about domestic and teen dating violence (Share), have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss various issues brought up during the multimedia and live presentations (Discuss), and then learn more about the local services available to individuals who experience said abuses so that they themselves may benefit or can pass on the information to family or friends in need (Refer).
Only through education will the cycle of domestic violence be broken.
